Sit down and read this (no, not in that chair!)
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers in the $7.6 billion-a-year office furniture industry are researching how to apply ergonomic factors in designing the ideal office chair for workers who spend large amounts of time sitting in front of desktop computers. An estimated 40 million US workers spend the majority of their work day at a computer terminal and as those numbers increase, so to do the problems of sore muscles, stiff backs and in severe cases, disabling injuries that result in expensive medical claims and lawsuits. Applying ergonomic research techniques, such as time-lapse photography and electronic-embedded seats, to chair design has often divided the industry. Large manufacturers undertake ergonomic research but often prefer to stick with simple designs that have few parts because they are generally cheaper to manufacture. Several smaller manufacturers strongly believe in adjustable chairs that can be more expensive.
