Rogers' bid for more of Sportsnet nixed

Rogers Broadcasting Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Rogers Communications Inc., will not be allowed to boost its holdings in the newly launched all-sports cable television channel CTV Sportsnet from 20% to 40%, according to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications (CRTC). The CRTC said the acquisition of more specialty channels will only be permitted when the industry does inroads on the rollout of digital television. The regional CTV Sportsnet was launched in over 6.5 million households in early part of October 1998.

Cogeco buys Hamilton cable company
Article Abstract:
Cogeco Cable Inc of Montreal has acquired Cableworks Communications Inc of Hamilton, Ontario, from LevFam Holdings Inc for C$162.5 million. Cogeco paid $2,539 a subscriber for Cableworks, which operates systems in the Southern Ontario city of Hamilton and adjacent Stoney Creek, Fergus, Grimsby and Halton. Cogeco will pay for the acquisition with bank debt and has the right to pay up to C$27.5 million of the price with insubordinate voting shares of Cogeco.
