Ehud Barak was elected president of Israel on a 56% margin, but the nation's parliament remains without unity. The Knesset looks to Barak to form a coalition government, since his One Israel party has only 20% of the Knesset's total votes. Barak's advisors in the election included Americans Bob Shrum and Bill Clinton campaign associate James Carville.

The Israeli elections for prime minister and Parliament in May 1999 will be decided on the issue of character more than policy positions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is trailing Labor Party candidate Ehud Barak. However, many belive the results may be different because of the elections in 1996 when Netanyahu pulled an upset.

Article Abstract:

Israel's prime minister, Ehud Barak, has decided to first negotiate for peace with the Arabs and then deal with increasing turmoil among Jews in the government. Barak's often unclear political agenda is outlined along with perspectives on his character and ability to influence domestic issues.
