Scientists do not know why people who served in the 1990-1991 Gulf War have three times more serious health complaints than other veterans. Many soldiers were exposed to toxic substances such as burning oil wells and pesticides. Many were given experimental vaccines and exposed to nerve gas.

Pres Jiang Zemin's visit to the US resulted in no new political agreements but the leader did negotiate a lucrative $4.1 billion trade deal with Boeing for 50 aircraft. Protesters picketed Jiang during his trip over issues such as human rights, but they had little impact.
