Values like hard work and family solidarity may not be enough to withstand the financial crisis and possible political instability that threatens twenty years of prosperity for East Asia. Attacks on Hong Kong's currency, a run on a small Chinese bank, and a stock market crash have left many in Pacific Rim nations panicked. The economic instability may endanger US interests contingent on Asian partnerships.
