Values like hard work and family solidarity may not be enough to withstand the financial crisis and possible political instability that threatens twenty years of prosperity for East Asia. Attacks on Hong Kong's currency, a run on a small Chinese bank, and a stock market crash have left many in Pacific Rim nations panicked. The economic instability may endanger US interests contingent on Asian partnerships.

Peregrine is now bankrupt with estimated debts of $1 billion, victim of a series related business failures spawned by the collapse of the Indonesian rupiah. Philip Tose, architect of Peregrine's rise as the first Western firm to master Asian crony capitalism, reflects on Indonesia's failure to adopt reforms in December 1997, and on his desperate attempts to save the firm.
