Article Abstract:
This article assesses the sustained upward movement of the US stock market since the crash of October 1987, the effects of this on the US economy, and the prospects for an eventual sharp drop in share prices. Relevant points include uncertainty that the US Federal Reserve could protect the economy from excessive harm from a bear market as it did after the 1987 crash, and signs that many investors need little prompting to withdraw from the market.
