Going to seed
Article Abstract:
Biotechnology is being promoted by its sponsors in the agricultural chemical industry as the only means for feeding the world's expanding population. Detractors point to the effects of the green revolution, which temporarily expanded food production but destroyed or severely depleted vast amounts of farmland as an example of poor use of technology. Proponents of biodiversity are against the establishment of proprietary rights on genetically altered plants because of the constraints this would put on third-world farmers. Farmers are the best means for protection of this fragile resource.

Keep out: flora and fauna about: pollution and ecological degradation are rife in Britain's rivers, and new evidence places the blame on farmers
Article Abstract:
The UK's streams and rivers are badly polluted and causing risk to the inhabiting flora and fauna. The blame can be placed on irresponsible farming at the water's edge and in surrounding areas. Creating a broad buffer strip, with deep rooted trees and shrubs, along the streams is one way to protect the wildlife habitats. Another, is the implementation of stricter land use policies. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food has created an initiative in which farmers are paid to use existing grasslands for grazing and create broad buffers in targeted areas.
