Gemplus met le cap/
Article Abstract:
Smart cards are increasingly becoming part of a whole system including services, development, integration, etc. The French group Gemplus, a leader in smart cards world-wide, now supplies a complete range of software and hardware components for smart cards, including readers, circuit sets and firmware. The group expects to make FFr 500mn in sales in readers in the year 2000, from an expected FFr 200mn in 1998. With some 220,000 readers sold, the recently created department in charge of this activity, called Integrated solutions, puts Gemplus among the leaders in this activity. Gemplus is also about to set up a new subsidiary or department dedicated to the certification of securitized transactions, as part of a strategy to broaden the group's scope of integrated solutions for smart cards. Software products absorb 75% of the r&d budget at Gemplus, though the group still makes more than 90% of its turnover in smart cards.

The inconclusive COP
Article Abstract:
The Fourth Conference of Parties (COP) was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in Nov 1998, as a follow-up to the Kyoto accord in 1997. The latter agreement required the US to reduce its annual greenhouse gas emissions by 7% below 1990 levels from 2008 to 2012. However, nothing concrete was ever accomplished by COP. Its main achievement was a plan of action which is a mere timetable for making the more important decisions by 2000.

Evaluating the feasibility of local cooperative consolidations: a case study
Article Abstract:
A methodology of assessing the feasibility of proposed mergers of local agricultural cooperatives is presented. The method uses a set of financial performance measures relative to firm size to pinpoint cooperatives with the greatest potential for improvement from consolidation. This approach is tested on a case of two pilot groups of Kansas cooperatives identified as merger candidates.
