Bertrand Russell in ethics and politics
Article Abstract:
Bertrand Russell's writings on ethics and politics deserve more attention. A good recent discussion is found in 'Bertrand Russell: A Political Life' by Alan Ryan. Russell's metaethical position changed over time and is difficult to pin down, but his substantive ethics were utilitarian, modified by the substitution of desire and impulse satisfaction for hedonism. Russell's political activism began with opposition to Britain's involvement in World War I and continued with radical opposition to the nuclear arms race and the war in Vietnam. He advocated democratic socialism, but also held elitist views.

Ethics and cognitive science
Article Abstract:
Cognitive science can contribute to moral philosophy in a number of areas, such as in understanding the structure of moral categories, the nature of hedonic states and preferences and the role of empathy. For example, research on categorization suggests that moral concepts are not represented in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions, but rather by prototypes and exemplars. Efforts to measure subjective well-being show the extent to which the method of elicitation influences expression of values and preferences. Research on empathy has implications for both descriptive and prescriptive ethics.

The reversal test: Eliminating status quo bias in applied ethics
Article Abstract:
The psychological evidence for the pervasiveness of status quo bias in human decision making is reviewed which gives reason for doubting that this bias is present in analyses of human enhancement ethics. When the bias is removed, the objections are unlikely and it is concluded that the case for developing and using genetic enhancements is much stronger than realized.
