"A foothold in Europe": the aesthetics and politics of American war cemeteries in Western Europe
Article Abstract:
There are 20 American cemeteries in Western Europe which contain the remains of 31,000 American casualties from World War I and 73,000 American casualties from World War II. The standardized design of the cemeteries, their unemotional epitaphs and their location far from home and community do not evoke the sense of personal tragedy or mourning associated with premature death. Rather, these cemeteries are American cultural and political footholds in Europe.

Politics in an American lifeboat: the case of Laotian immigrants
Article Abstract:
Laotian immigrants in the US strongly desire to show their loyalty to their adopted country and its democratic political system. This finding, based on intensive interviews with 30 Laotian refugees, disproves the widely held notion that immigrants from culturally exotic countries are the most likely to be politically disruptive. On the contrary, the Laotians' support for US democracy demonstrates that immigrants are a force for political stability.
