Afghanistan in 1997: the war moves north
Article Abstract:
Afghanistan has been preoccupied with war since the emergence of the Taliban movement in summer 1994. Since then, bitter fighting has spread to the north, with the front north of Kabul the object of contention between the Taliban and Ahmad Shah Mas'ud. Amidst all the fighting, gas and oil pipeline projects promise to share Central Asia's energy resources with Afghanistan. South Asia and the rest of the world. Although the Taliban has yet to make a decision, proposals for pipeline construction have been submitted by Argentina's Bridas and an international oil consortium.

The decline of the Pashtuns in Afghanistan
Article Abstract:
Pashtuns have traditionally been Afghanistan's most dominant ethnic group, controlling both the government and the economy. However, the fall of the Najibullah government in Apr. 1992 signalled the start of the Pashtuns' decline as the dominant ethnic group in the country. The Pashtuns are losing control of large chunks of the country and the number of Pashtuns serving in government institutions are declining. However, whether the Pashtuns will altogether lose their hold over Afghan society remains to be seen.

Afghanistan in 1992: a Hobbesian state of nature
Article Abstract:
The social situation in Afghanistan may soon turn into complete anarchy if the transitional government does not take drastic actions to stop the civil war. National elections were slated in Jan 1993 but the event was expected to legitimize the existing political elite and not create a democratic leadership. Thus, the war may have ushered the demise of the communist regime but the social upheaval continues.
