Cambodia in 1998: from despair to hope?
Article Abstract:
There had been some positive developments in Cambodian affairs that should be cause for optimism, although they must be viewed with caution. The country's political situation appeared to have stabilized since second prime minister Hun Sen's bloody coup against first prime minister Norodom Ranarridh in Jul 1997. This was reflected in the holding of a national election on Jul 26, 1998, an exercise which was judged free and fair by the international community. Relations with other countries substantially improved, as did factional politico-military relations. Meanwhile, the Khmer Rouge rebellion ended and Hun Sen and Norodom Ranarridh agreed to form a coalition government once more.

Cambodia in 1996: of tigers, crocodiles, and doves
Article Abstract:
Cambodian politics in 1996 was dominated by three interrelated developments. The first is the rift between First Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Second Prime Minister Hun Sen as both felt the need to strengthen their respective power base. The second is the departure from the Khmer Rouge of guerrilla leader Ieng Sary and his faction. The third is the weakening of the democratic movement's chances of contributing to Cambodia's political development in the short term. These three dynamics were reflected in the economic and foreign affairs developments in the country.

Cambodia in 1995: from hope to despair
Article Abstract:
A power struggle still plagues Cambodia and this has become a major hindrance to development. Factional disputes impede democratization and the factional hierarchy and the monarchy both want to expand their political power. In trying to serve their own interests, both groups have made decisions detrimental to all Cambodians. Democratization cannot proceed and the economy deteriorates further.
