Deaf identity, language politics, and "hyphenated" ethnography
Article Abstract:
Ethnographers need to examine what occurs when they study cultures they do not fully belong to but are not fully separated from to recognize and avoid possible instances of distortion of those cultures. A speaking deaf ethnographer who is fully assimilated into society has difficulty studying the culture of a group of deaf persons who use sign language. The ethnographer's work is affected by her presence on the periphery of both the hearing and deaf communities.

Ethnography, journalism and literature: ethnographic text and Southern author Harry Crews
Article Abstract:
The works of Harry Crews, in the style of Southern storytelling, blend journalism, biography, and ethnography. Crews used his experiences of growing up poor in the South as the basis for his surreal characters in novels such as "The Knockout Artist" and "Car." Crews locates his stories in real environments and landscapes he has experienced. Crews' drawing on personal experiences and observations provides his work with an ethnographic flavor.

"These stories are not 'real,' but they are as true as I can make them": Lee Smith's literary ethnography
Article Abstract:
A critical analysis of Lee Smith's fictional ethnographic writings depicting Appalachian culture is discussed. The author argues that Smith's fictional ethnography provides a superior representation of Appalachia than standard academic ethnographic studies because she shows culture, were as ethnographers write culture.
