"Let us all be kissing-friends?": Zora Neale Hurston and race politics in Dixie
Article Abstract:
A re-examination of African American journalist Zora Neale Hurston's autobiography, 'Dust Tracks on a Road', written in 1942, and her reporting, in which she defends the southern states' racial politics, reveals the complexity of her narrative approach. The autobiography shows that Hurston creates a place for herself in the South through accentuating the conflict between national, regional and racial identification during World War II. Her work undermines easy assumptions made by the North regarding the South and racial matters.

Shifting perspectives on American exceptionalism: Recent literature on American labor relations and labor politics
Article Abstract:
Historian Alan Dawley proclaimed the concept of American exceptionalism to be dead, but this was premature considering the subsequent publication of books from Byron Shafer and Seymour Martin Lipset, reaffirming the idea. However the notion of American uniqueness has been challenged and new ideas of uniqueness are emerging. Challenges to the Sombart-Perlman view of American workers are reviewed, and new ideas on the uniqueness of American labor politics and labor relations are explored.
