Managing the forest in Colonial Indochina: c. I900-I940
Article Abstract:
The colonial attitudes towards forest resources by the people who relied on the forest for their livelihood, in Indochina, are discussed and the ways in which both economic and cultural preoccupations about the 'rational' and 'scientific' use of the resources was reflected in the institutions and policies of the state, are explored. Both the mechanisms used to control indigenous people and practices are highlighted.

J. S. Furnivall is most renowned for his conceptualization of the 'Plural Society', a term that is a durable concept of scholarship on multiethnic societies, particularly in Southeast Asia. Furnivall's thoughts and their impact in Southeast Asia studies are reevaluated and a more complex attitude to colonial development and freedom is portrayed.
