Masyarakat Adat, difference, and the limits of recognition in Indonesia's forest zone
Article Abstract:
This article examines the political activity of 'masyarakat adat' (people who adhere to customary ways) in Indonesia, a group that has been trying to redefine its place in the nation since ending of the Suharto regime. The author, focusing on the groups interest in nature conservation and land management, discusses the challenges 'masyarakat adat' faces in attempting to gain co-sovereignty, such as overcoming other agendas that are put forth in the name of national interests.

Article Abstract:
The history of Timor is intimately linked to the shifting fortunes of sandalwood production and trade, and to control the production and trade in sandalwood is to control the policy, at least to the extent that the situation remained uncontested. The proponents believe from many years that the sandalwood resources in Timor are fully depleted with little or no hope of recovery.

Conflict, justice, and the stranger-king indigenous roots of colonial rule in Indonesia and elsewhere
Article Abstract:
The expansion of the colonial state in northern Sulawesi, indigenous attitudes to incorporation into foreign-dominated state systems are often ambivalent and sometimes positive. Further implications for the study of Indonesian states and politics in the context of current debates concerning civil society and the rule of law, are suggested.
