North Korea in 1997: new opportunities in a time of crisis
Article Abstract:
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) experienced new opportunities in spite of the widespread famine, scarce medical and energy sources it underwent in 1997. The negotiations it accomplished by replacing the 1993 Armistice with a more secure peace pact and the union of power brought about by the empowerment of Kim Jong II enhanced the country's political condition. Reforms within the South Korean government, bilateral relations with the US and improved economic agreementS with the Republic of Korea to generate IMF funds will help DPRK overcome succeeding problems in the years ahead.

North Korea in 1998: a year of foreboding developments
Article Abstract:
The year 1998 was not a particularly fruitful period in the history of North Korea. Pres Kim Jong Il's administration was mostly preoccupied with a host of social, economic and political problems, including the food shortage, the deteriorating capabilities of the country's armed forces and relations with South Korea and the US. The Asian financial crisis was not even among Kim's concerns, as his attention was on how to consolidate his power base and maintain economic self-reliance.

North Korea in 1994: brinkmanship, breakdown, and breakthrough
Article Abstract:
The year 1994 saw North Korea struggling in the transition to the post-Kim Il Sung era. It was the most challenging period for Pyongyang, both in domestic and international politics, since the Korean War of 1950-53. Its nuclear brinkmanship policy via the landmark Geneva Accord promised to lead to the cooperative security of the two Koreas, as well as Japan, China, Russia and the US. The agreement was also a major factor in attracting investors to the North Korean market.
