The Philippines in 1998: opportunity amid crisis

Article Abstract:

Economic and political issues dominated Philippine affairs in 1998. At the same time that the global financial crisis was taking its toll on the country's economy, the May general elections had many people expecting a political turmoil. Election doomsayers were predicting either massive fraud or cancellation of the elections as the value of the peso declined by 40% in October. The elections went as scheduled, with movie actor Joseph Estrada emerging victorious over administration candidate Jose de Venecia. Estrada, however, inherited an administration that faces a bleak future in terms of economic growth.

The Philippines in 1997: weathering political and economic turmoil

Article Abstract:

Political and economic turbulence marked the year 1997, particularly the second half, for the Philippines. While the first six months saw progress and stability, the second half witnessed the currency crisis that swept most of Asia and the disturbance caused by the proposed charter change that would allow a second term for the president. However, Pres Ramos dashed the hopes of charter change advocates out of concern that this will aggravate the economic situation. Amidst all these irritants, the country was in the thick of preparations for the celebration of its 100th year of independence in 1998.
