The Philippines in 1996: a house finally in order?
Article Abstract:
The most important development that happened to Philippine politics in 1996 was the peace signing between the government and the Moro National Liberation Front. Years of persistence has finally paid off despite opposition from some sectors in the Southern Philippines. Economically, the country also experienced growth in GDP which grew to 6.8%, only .2% lower than the projected 7% growth. The country was also successful in hosting the Fourth Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Nov. 1996.

The Philippines in 1995: growth amid challenges
Article Abstract:
The Philippines experienced relative political and economic stability in 1995. The 1995 elections brought overwhelming victory to the government coalition in the Senate, House of Representatives and major local government posts. Although the economy grew at a rate of 5.7% in 1995, up from 4.8% in 1994, it was below the government target of 6% The country also had to settle minor conflicts with China and Singapore in 1995.

The Philippines in 1994: renewed growth and contested reforms
Article Abstract:
The Philippine economy maintained its steady growth in 1994 as Pres. Fidel V. Ramos' efforts to address the energy crisis, increase investor confidence and stabilize the political situation proved successful. However, considerable opposition greeted Ramos' economic and political reform programs. Peace negotiations with rebel groups continued and relations with Pacific Rim and European countries improved.
