Organ theft narratives
Article Abstract:
Stories of organ theft, regarded by some as modern phenomena, belong to the tradition of rumor that identifies enemies and reveals evil conspiracies. Organ-theft narratives function among elite groups to describe the evils of modernity, expressing anxieties that are felt but repressed by the portrayal of science as a powerful force for improving lives. Urban dysfunction and the harsh situation of Latin America's poor motivate most organ-theft narratives.
