Paternalism and freedom: the evangelical encounter in colonial Chhattisgarh, Central India
Article Abstract:
Evangelical missionaries in Chhattisgarh, Central India, in the late 19th century were paternalistic in their social conduct with the natives, and along with the local leaders, supervised the daily life of the Chhattisgarh people. The local Christian converts found the strict code of moral conduct too restrictive and rebelled against the missionaries. The missionaries came to be regarded as malevolent despots instead of being peace-loving foreigners.
