Work and life of the rural proletariat in Java's coastal plain
Article Abstract:
The rural working classes in West Java depend on agriculture for their living, though other means of livelihood also exist. The modernization of agricultural machinery created a wide division between the land-owning classes and the non-mechanized agricultural sector, leading to the formation of a distinct rural hierarchy. The farmers are paid low wages to preempt an escalation of production costs, but political subjugation of the working class is the real intention behind the non-implementation of minimum wages.
