Presidential address: 'I have Scinde': Flogging a deal (white male orientalist) horse
Article Abstract:
Wendy Doniger's presidential address to the Annual Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies, Boston in March 1999, begins with a story concerning General Sir Charles James Fox Napier who became commander of Sind or Scinde, at the western tip of South Asia in 1839. The sense of sin is not often a part of the discussion of the story of Napier in India, but may help to avert the ambivalence which threatens to poison scholarship about India. The way of thinking was changed by Edward W. Said's book Orientalism, published in 1978, and it is no longer possible to thin without the postcolonial critique.

Reflections on Rhiannon and the horse episodes in 'Pwyll'
Article Abstract:
The mysterious figure of Rhiannon has been dealt with extensively by scholars of Welsh folklore, especially her connection to horses. It is generally accepted that she is a variant of the European goddess Epona. Events similar to those in the Rhiannon myth occur in folktales around the world, making it difficult to explain the myth in terms of Celtic history or mythology.

Organ-theft legends have made their way around the world in the early 1990s may have peaked in Guatemala in 1994 when the story of American tourist stealing organs from children caused anti-American rioting and violence against American Peace Corp volunteers.
