Representing the worker: The worker-intellectual alliance of the 1980s in South Korea

A study investigates the role of the intellectual in the Korean labor movement of the 1980s, examining the ways in which young intellectuals became factory workers, often under assumed names. The tensions and contradictions inherent in intellectuals' roles in the labor movement are explored together with the complexities of the politics of representation.

Social memory as ritual practice: commemorating spirits of the military dead at Yasukuni Shinto Shrine
Article Abstract:
This article examines the social and psychological implications of loss of life due to war. The author, focusing on Japan after World War II, maintains the Japanese share a social memory of the war which is ritualistically kept alive in the commemoration of the dead, regardless that they lost the war.
