State responses to Islamic resurgence in Malaysia: accommodation, co-option, and confrontation
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian government is using the techniques of accommodation, co-option and confrontation to deal with the resurgence of Islam. The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) joined hands with the opposition Islamic party during the late 1970s, which marked the birth of Islamic resurgence in Malaysia. The government formed the Pusat Islam and the PERKIM to check the Islamic missionaries, and imposed restrictions on the ABIM in 1981. This approach to Islamic resurgence was peaceful until 1994, when the government opted for repressive measures to control the Al Arqam movement.
