The possibilities of flight: the celebration of our wings in 'Song of Solomon,' 'Praisesong for the Widow,' and 'Mama Day.'
Article Abstract:
Toni Morrison, Paule Marshall, and Gloria Naylor have explored the concept of flight in their fiction. Their works portray slave resistance and escape, the powers of creative imagination, and the post-emancipation of African Americans. Flight is often associated with wishful thinking or other means of escape, but protective flight can take the form of psychically escaping threat or being absorbed by lore and creatively constructed language.

Notes toward a voodoo hermeneutics: soul rhythms, marvelous transitions, and passages to the creole saints in Praisesong for the Widow
Article Abstract:
The power of Paule Marshall's "Praisesong for the Window" rises in large part from its immersion in the soul musics and continuing rites of spirit possession (voodoo). Through attentiveness to the ritual summons and enduring power of Afro-creole music, an attempt is made to show how the strong work helps in reconnecting North America with the Caribbean and Africa.
