The prism of race: two Texas folk performers
Article Abstract:
Assumptions about race by both blacks and whites affected the presentation and development of blues music. The handling of Lightnin' Hopkins and George Coleman, also known as Bongo Joe, by white persons in the music industry affected how people perceived these performers and their music. Whites placed these musicians and their music within the ideal of folk pastoralism. The musicians changed their behavior to reflect their understanding of whites and how whites perceived blacks.

Strategies of presentation and control at Disney's EPCOT: "field notes" on tourism, folk ideas, and manipulating culture
Article Abstract:
Folklorists should study EPCOT's World Showcase at Walt Disney World to achieve a better understanding of how tourists understand and perceive the various cultures they encounter on trips and how cultural stereotypes are created. EPCOT's presentation of cultures is similar to how cultures are presented at folk festivals and in museums. The World Showcase provides a stereotypical view of each nation represented.
