A compact scheme to catch them young

Article Abstract:

The University of Abertay Dundee, Scotland, has launched an Academic Compact Scheme under which children aged 12 and 13 are guaranteed places at the university as long as they behave well, do their homework, attend school punctually and reach designated standards. A pilot project has been established with Braeview Academy in Dundee, Scotland, where the idea that pupils have targets set for them has been welcomed by staff. The university rejects allegations that this scheme is mainly designed to boost student numbers.

Academic battle of the sexes

Article Abstract:

Girls perform better than boys in UK schools, but male students at the country's universities obtain more first-class degrees than their female counterparts. Recent research indicates that female students may be negatively affected by their agreeableness and openness. Male students are more willing than female students to take risks, and this means that they are more likely to put forward original views. It is also possible that teaching styles and examining systems at UK universities favour male students.
