Article Abstract:

French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl will probably emphasize their friendship and mutual understanding during their summit meeting in Avignon, France. The conflict over the presidency of the European Central Bank has been treated relatively lightly in France, but Germans have reacted with anger and indignation. This indicates that the two countries do not really understand each other very well any more, despite their leaders' shows of friendship. World shares a strange ceremony of science, superstition and awe

Article Abstract:

There were varying reactions across the world to the solar eclipse that took place on Aug 11, 1999. In Italy, the Pope cut short his weekly audience to allow those attending to view the eclipse, while in Marseilles, France, there was a riot as people fought over 5,000 free pairs of 'eclipse glasses.' In Lebanon, many people remained in their homes because newspapers had warned about dangerous rays emanating from the eclipse. In India, some people believed that the eclipse would herald some form of disaster.
