An Islam of slogans fed the riots, so did white Islamophobia

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that the recent clashes between 300 Asian youths and 200 police in the Manningham area of Bradford, UK, were sparked off by the growing cultural and generation gap within the Asian community. The Asian youths themselves point to a much more direct cause - the treatment of an Asian woman by two police officers. The Asian community certainly cannot be seen as a single unit, and there are wide differences in the way each Asian group relates to British society. There is a great deal of mistrust, and community relations are poor.

How Brixton became a byword for disorder

Article Abstract:

The London borough of Brixton came to be closely associated with a new type of social disorder when it saw three days of violent rioting in Apr 1981. Its problems were attributed to a range of factors, including inappropriate policing, unemployment and racial tensions. There were also riots elsewhere, so the Brixton riots were not specifically about local issues. Brixton has recently experienced further rioting, highlighting the problems of inner cities in the UK today.
