Folic acid: essential for cell division
Article Abstract:
The water-soluble B vitamin folic acid or folate is an important nutrient for the human body because it is essential for cell division. It was first isolated from spinach leaves in 1946 and occurs in high concentrations in green, leafy vegetables. As a methyl donor it is involved in RNA and DNA synthesis and amino acid interconversions. Deficiency in folic acid can contribute to heart disease and can cause cervical dysplasia, anemia and birth defects. Some prescription medications can deplete folic acid such as oral contraceptives, Methotrexate and Anticonvulsants.

Vitamin "cousins" can help fight cancer
Article Abstract:
Vitamin A and its cousin beta-carotene have been found to help reduce risks to diseases, including cancer. High doses of vitamin A can help prevent the transmission of the HIV virus from mother to fetus and treat acne vulgaris. Beta-carotene can prevent skin disorders and protect the skin from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. It also prevents the generation of free radicals and serves as antioxidant.
