Good for women, not bad for China
Article Abstract:
There is a strong anti-Chinese feeling in the western world, and this has been reflected in reactions to the fact that China has hosted the Fourth UN Global Conference on Women. This has turned out to be the largest-ever UN conference, and China has found it hard to meet the needs of the 35,000 delegates. There has also been criticism of China's record on the rights of women. Organisers are emphasising that this is a conference about women, rather than about China.

Let's be alcoholics, like in the movies!
Article Abstract:
British society is still very tolerant of alcohol, even though other substances which alter behaviour and personality in the same way as alcohol are widely criticised. Indeed, young people are encouraged to drink and become dependent on alcohol. Alcohol abuse has become very common at universities and colleges, but students are almost never criticised for this. This trend to glamorise alcohol is reflected in a recent film, 'Leaving Las Vegas.'

Away with price-fixing - and on with VAT!
Article Abstract:
The Net Book Agreement, which has recently collapsed, gave books a status which they did not really deserve and fixed their price artificially. The price of books has become much higher than it should be in a free market, and fixing the price of books in this way cannot be justified by any argument. It is now time to recognise that books are nothing more than commodities, and to begin trading them in this way.
