Article Abstract:

The UK's National Lottery has attracted 5 billion pounds sterling during its first year, with 150 people having become millionaires. It has distributed 30 million pounds sterling a week in grants, thus instigating dramatic changes in public spending. It is possible that many lotteries targeted at specific causes, such as medical research, will be launched over the next few decades, with lotteries competing with each other to attract money. Prizes will have to become increasingly large if individual lotteries are to be successful.

Suited to a new politics

Article Abstract:

Common Purpose, a national organisation which aims to encourage young professionals who have the potential to be future leaders, organises group visits to deprived areas, giving young professionals an insight into problems in their local community. It was launched in 1989 out of a wish by founder Julia Middleton to channel the desire of young people take positive action for the benefit of others. These people are often disillusioned by party politics, preferring to take action through finding common ground with others.

Frestonians forever. Yeah, cool

Article Abstract:

The Republic of Frestonia was established in eight acres of west London, England in 1977. It had its own passports, coat of arms and stamps and asked the United Nations for a peace-keeping force if the GLC encroached. Sharing and squatting was the usual lifestyle. In 1992 there are about 50 citizens. The GLC had a public inquiry and rebuilt the area according to the inhabitants' design. The new homes have reasonable rents but the community has dispersed.
