Lester Bowie

Article Abstract:

Trumpet and flugelhorn player Lester Bowie played first in local rhythm-and-blues bands in Maryland. He moved to Chicago, IL, in 1965, becoming musical director to Fontella Bass. He joined the jazz workshop AACM in the same year. This group moved to France in 1968, recording the LP 'A Jackson in Your House' in 1969. He performed throughout Europe, and in 1969 recorded with the Baden-Baden Free Jazz Orchestra. In 1983, he was a member of the New York Hot Trumpet Repertory, and in 1990 recorded the theme music for the television series 'The Bill Cosby Show.'

Freddy Randall

Article Abstract:

Trumpeter and bandleader Freddy Randall began playing the trumpet at the age of 16. He joined Albert Bale's Darktown Strutters, and in 1939 formed his first band, the Saint Louis Four. He served in the Rifle Brigade until 1943, and in 1944 joined Freddie Mirfield's Garbage Men. In the same year, he won an Individual Award at the annual Melody Maker concert. He formed his own band in 1946, and from the late 1940s this band played every Sunday evening at the Cooks' Ferry Inn in Edmonton, London, England.

Johnny Coles

Article Abstract:

Trumpeter Johnny Coles first became known among fans of jazz music when he performed solos with the Gil Evans orchestras between 1958 and 1964. He joined the Charlie Mingus Workshop in 1964, and played on some of the bassist's recordings. He joined the sextet newly created by Herbie Hancock in 1968, but moved to Duke Ellington's orchestra in 1971. He rejoined Ray Charles when Ellington died in 1974 and worked with drummer Art Blakey's quintet in 1976.
