Murder by manipulation: when a doctor doesn't see

Article Abstract:

Sufferers from Muchhausen syndrome form relationships with doctors treating the patients they harm. The woman regards the child as a fetishist object to manipulate her relationship with the doctor. She seeks recognition and revenge by making the child and the doctor victims. The doctor fails to notice clues as his training teaches the solving of clinical problems. Dr Herbert Schreier, head of psychiatry at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Oakland, California, CA, found the sufferers had been humiliated and neglected as children.

Now smile on the other side of your face

Article Abstract:

Dr Martin Skinner, lecturer in psychology at the University of Warwick, and Dr Brian Mullen of Syracuse University, New York, analysed 14 studies of facial asymmetry. Research shows that the left-hand side of the face shows more expression than the right, particularly if it is insincere emotion. The emotion is more likely to be honest if the facial expression is symmetrical. Chimerical facial composites, photographs constructed from two left sides or two right sides demonstrate this clearly.

A shorter intake of breath

Article Abstract:

Some people who suffer from asthma have found that using the Buteyko method, which teaches them to control their breathing, allows them to reduce their drug intake or even stop taking drugs altogether. The method, developed by Russian physiologist Konstantin Butekyo, works on the premise that all asthmatics overbreathe. The National Asthma Campaign has emphasised that the benefits of this method have not been proven.
