Sorry is the hardest word (or the easiest)
Article Abstract:
Shame is becoming a very powerful social force in the western world, as it has long been in Japan. In an increasingly fragmented society, shame is restricted to small peer groups, rather than to a community as a whole. It has become increasingly common for high-profile people to make public apologies for their behaviour. This trend has served to make apology a devalued concept, with confession coming in the place of contrition rather than following it. Only the sufferer can forgive the person making the apology, not society as a whole.

The house that Thatcher dismantled
Article Abstract:
Housing associations now provide homes for around 1 million of the poorest people in the UK, and play a key role in housing the poor now that local authorities are no longer allowed to increase their council housing stock. However, some observers believe that housing associations are now facing a crisis, with a new generation of entrepreneurial managers driving out the idealists. Rents have gone up, while the size and standard of homes is falling and reserves are being wasted.

Farewell Britain, hello the Great Wen
Article Abstract:
It is worth making an effort not to read while travelling, as this makes it possible to observe fellow travellers and the landscape. Reading on a journey fuels the modern sense of dislocation, adding to people's sense of always being in the past or the future, but not the present. When travelling from Cambridge, England, to London, England, those who read fail to notice that there is a transition from countryside to suburb to town.
