The Indian conquest of English

Article Abstract:

Works of Indian literature written in English have become extremely popular recently. There is now extensive recognition in the western world of Indian literary talent, and new writers are emerging all the time. These include Arundhati Roy, whose first novel, 'The God of Small Things,' is to be published shortly. Indian literature is particularly fascinating for its contradictions. It is written for the world about India, but is beyond the understanding of most ordinary Indians because it is in English.

The pride of India is written in English

Article Abstract:

Indian culture has resisted encroachment by foreign interests and this is evident in the motion picture industry, dress, food, music and dance. Indian culture is generally preferred, though the English language is used extensively. Monuments built by English colonial rulers have been put to new uses. Indian newspapers are densely informative like past English newspapers, and are geared to an Indian audience and staffed only by Indians.

The quintessential English gentleman

Article Abstract:

Newsreader Trevor McDonald has an extremely positive image, being seen as a force of unity and calm. He is the most prominent black person in the media, and is viewed by some observers as pointing to a future when blacks will have a much stronger presence in broadcast and print journalism. However, others see him as representing the idyll of a multiracial Britain which developed in the 1950s and 1960s.
