The weapon on the left is used to inflict the kind of injuries seen on the right. In parts of Northern Ireland such beatings are seen as the only useful instrument of justice. Who is behind this violence? And whose interests does it serve?
Article Abstract:
The Good Friday peace agreement in Northern Ireland is being placed under great pressure by the many punishment shootings and beatings currently taking place. Loyalists and nationalists are carrying out an approximately equal number of attacks, but this issue has been taken up by Unionist politicians in Northern Ireland and Conservatives at Westminster, who claim that the paramilitaries are contravening the peace agreement. Some observers believe that the punishment attacks are being used to reinforce social control among nationalist and loyalist working-class communities.

KLA engages in fierce fighting with Serb army
Article Abstract:
The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe believes that the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) has shifted away from its strategy of defending villages from Serb forces. It is now focusing on hit-and-run guerrilla attacks against the Yugoslav army. It is also seeking to protect the many displaced ethnic Albanians who are sheltering in the hills. Many young Kosovo Albanian men have been prompted to join the KLA by the atrocities against their people.
