Unloved, unpaid and under-fed ... how a failed doctrine wrought havoc with Russia's dead army
Article Abstract:
Russia's armed forces are currently in a very poor state, with many soldiers not having received any payment for a long time. The official strength of the armed forces is 1.7 million, but desertion and manpower shortfalls mean that this is actually nearer to 1.3 million. There are plans to reduce this level even further, but the vast size of the country means that the number cannot be allowed to fall below 1 million. Only Russian nuclear weapons are kept in a high state of readiness, so nuclear defence would be the country's only option if it were attacked.

Big bang in Ukraine leaves Britain the nuclear leader
Article Abstract:
Ukraine has completed the return of 90% of its nuclear warheads to Russia, and has also destroyed a nuclear missile silo at the military base of Pervomaisk. This is being widely hailed as highlighting the success of the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (Start). Russia now has more nuclear weapons on its territory than any other European country, with the UK in second place.
