Unprepared and disillusioned: 60,000 student drop-outs
Article Abstract:
New research indicates that the number of students dropping out of UK universities could be much greater than generally believed, possibly as many as 60,000 a year. In many cases, students drop out because they are badly prepared for university life. They expect to have a very active social life and do very little work until towards the end of their course, and become disillusioned when they find that this is not the case. Others find that they cannot adapt to working independently after receiving a great deal of academic support at school.

BSc in student juggling
Article Abstract:
The UK's universities are now very keen to ensure that they fill all their student places, as if they fail to do so they could face a cut in their funding. This in turn will lead to courses being dropped and staff being made redundant. Universities have found it particularly hard to attract students to engineering, mathematics, technology and science courses.
