Special forces saddle up to look for enemy targets

There are now 50 commandos operating in Afghanistan, obtaining information about Taliban positions, fostering resistance to the regime and arranging logistical supplies for the opposition Northern Alliance. However, it has been necessary for the Allies to obtain Russian help in gathering intelligence.

The arrival of US Marines at an airstrip near Kandahar, Afghanistan, appears to signal the finalstages of the conflict in Afghanistan. The Marines have come to epitomize US military strategy, having been developed specifically for dangerous overseas missions of the type now being undertaken in Afghanistan.
