On the mechanism of plastic deformation induced surface roughness

Article Abstract:

The mechanism of the surface roughness induced by plastic deformation in aluminum materials is studied. Experiments are conducted in a universal testing machine wherein an aluminum sheet with a grain size of five micrometer and subjected to simulated plastic deformation is examined. The experimental data is then used to calculate for the material's root-mean-square roughness. Results show that surface roughness is caused by the slip bands and grain interactions generated by plastic deformation.

Orientation imaging microscopy investigation of the compression deformation of a (011) Ta single crystal

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the compression deformation of a (011) Ta single crystal using orientation imaging microscopy (OIM), an effective method of characterizing lattice rotations associate with compression deformation of single crystals. Patterns of alternating crystal rotations that develop as a function of strain and display evolving length scales were revealed by OIM.

Cyclic deformation behavior and dislocation substructures of hexagonal Zircaloy-4 under out-of-phase loading

Article Abstract:

Results show that plastic deformation behavior of Zircaloy-4 stainless steel material displays a pronounced initial hardening and subsequent continuous softening during out-of-phase cycling. Data further reveal that the stabilized saturation stresses of Zircaloy-4 under the above condition are much higher than under uniaxial cycling.
