Care of the living, care of the dying: reconceptualizing nursing home care
Article Abstract:
Much attention has been directed to inadequacies of care of the terminally ill in hospitals. Nursing care should be reconceptualized in this area and focused on the chronic living-dying period, on those in nursing homes. Comfort care short be emphasized more and function less. White, middle-aged alert, oriented adults with cancer have been the focus of hospice care, which should be more culturally sensitive. Medicare reimbursement requires a 6-month prognosis and often that causes late referral to hospice care.

Alzheimer's disease and managed care: how much will it cost?
Article Abstract:
Research is planned to identify ways to provide comprehensive managed care services to Alzheimer's patients in a cost-effective manner. A 1998 study found that Medicare patients with Alzheimer's dementia cost twice as much to care for as the average Medicare beneficiary. This cost would be higher than most monthly capitation payments. Simple screening tests are needed to identify Alzheimer's patients early so that interventions to prevent functional decline and hospitalization can be implemented.
