Elder abuse and neglect in Poland
Article Abstract:
A research study conducted to ascertain the causes and extent of elder abuse in Poland found that cases of violence against the aged are occasional and the family bonds are still maintained. The causes of elder neglect in the cities are shortage of housing facilities and alcoholism whereas in the rural areas the division of labor leads to family conflicts. The number of old persons who become targets of juvenile delinquency during economic crisis is also a concern. The social services in the country have failed to address the problems of the elderly.

Elder abuse in South Africa
Article Abstract:
Social disintegration caused by apartheid is one of the dominant causes of the maltreatment of the aged in South Africa. Black laborers abandoned their elders when they migrated to the cities in search of work. The South African Council for the Aged in 1981 initiated the debate on abuse of older persons and demanded support from the public officials. Legislative amendments, community education and professional help seem to be the answer to this social problem.
