The intergenerational cycle of violence in child and elder abuse
Article Abstract:
A study of subjects inflicting elder and child abuse indicates that childhood violence prompts such behavior. The Conflict Tactics Scales reveals that the theory of intergenerational transfer of family violence is more relevant in examining violence towards children than in cases of violence against elders. Elder abusing adult offspring and child abusing parents experienced similar overall episodes of violence as children. The effect of extreme childhood violence on later behavior and on interpersonal skills is discussed.
