Self-neglect among the elderly
Article Abstract:
Analysis of a 1988-90 quantitative data of cases of elder maltreatment obtained using the Wisconsin Elder Abuse Reporting System and interviews of elder abuse researchers show that self-neglect and elder abuse are strongly related to the type of living arrangements. Gender, age and racial factors have a weak influence. Factors such as dementia, mental disorders and drug or drinking problems show moderate correlation. The findings' significance for policy making and program development is discussed.

Multidisciplinary ethical decision-making: uniting differing professional perspectives
Article Abstract:
Multidisciplinary ethical decision-making is essential to avoid mistreatment in cases of elder abuse and neglect. Ethical problems may arise out of resource constraints, inadequate information about the client, the compartmentalization of social and medical services, and client autonomy. Professionals working in a multidisciplinary team should analyze each client within a specific context from different perspectives. This will lead to a' unified plan which can account for various options.
