Extent and determinants of hospitalization in a cohort of older disabled people
Article Abstract:
A longitudinal cohort study of noninstitutionalized disabled people aged 60 years and older has been conducted in Augsburg, South Germany, to identify the extent and determinants of hospitalization. The absolute hospitalization rate was 6.7 hospitalizations per 10 person-years at risk, and 19.2 days was the mean length of stay per hospitalization.

Problems of underdiagnosis and undertreatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in older adults are discussed. The need for better patient education and follow-up is stressed.
