A practical approach to identifying mortality-related factors in established long-term care residents
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine factors related to one year mortality in long-term care residents. Researchers examined Minimum Data Set (MDS) on 780 residents between Apr 1994 and Aug 1997. Bivariate proportional hazards models were used to examine the association between death and 65 resident factors such as physical, psychological, and medical conditions. The results revealed that using a widely available database for identifying factors linked with one year mortality in long-term care can be of benefit to patients, their families, and doctors.

Mortality and institutionalization following hip fracture
Article Abstract:
Increased risk of mortality and institutionalization was found to be associated with cognitive impairment, older age, and gender in a population-based prospective inception cohort study of hip fracture patients in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Intervention to improve postfracture physical function may lower risk of institutionalization, especially for patients who are older or congitively impaired.
