Factors influencing the proportion of food consumed by nursing home residents with dementia
Article Abstract:
Factors influencing the fraction of food consumed by nursing home residents with dementia vs the amount offered have been studied, and it has been found that the quality of the resident's interaction with the caregiver accounted for 32% of the variance. Interventions that promote eating have usually involved safe feeding and promoting ingestion of nutrients via several routes, but this study was based on Social Exchange Theory and dealt with quality of interaction between caregiver and care receiver. The caregiver's allowing the patient to control the relatiohship was most predictive, with specific resident behaviors, of variance. Eating is the most social of the activities of daily living and culturally determined. Clinicians should study interactional aspects of meals in the caregiving dyad when a person with late-stage dementia does not take in adequate nutrients.

It was found that VA nursing home residents with SMI were more prone to have behavior problems than those without SMI or dementia.
