The attentional demands of encoding and retrieval in younger and older adults: 2. Evidence from secondary task reaction time distributions
Article Abstract:
Benefits can be derived from extending analyses beyond measures of central tendency when seeking to identify the processes that control age-related changes in memory. Research in this area assessed the impact of encoding or retrieval on properties of secondary task reaction time (RT) distributions in younger and older adults. There is evidence for two mechanisms on which older adults' increased RT costs during encoding and retrieval are based. One mechanism is cognitive slowing, while the other is consistent with a reduction in attentional resources.

Adult age differences in recall of performed and nonperformed items
Article Abstract:
The extra information provided through enactment enhances the recall of cognitive activities, performed brief actions and nonperformed items in older and younger age groups. Age-related variance in memory for performed items correlates with age-related variance in memory for nonperformed items. Thus, the mechanisms of age-related influences on memory are common for both performed and nonperformed items. Working memory and perceptual speed affect age differences for both performed and nonperformed items.
